PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(21-3-2005) The first day of the 36 Trofeo Princesa Sofía - Madrid 2012 started with overcast skies and no wind with starts delayed until 15:00 hours. The Embat wind, 6 to 7 knots blew in most of the racing areas with smooth sea.
Only one race was sailed by four of the participating classes: Yngling, Dragon, Laser and Laser Radial, while the Europe, Mistral, Finn, Tornado, 49er and the 470 will have to wait for better weather conditions tomorrow.
In the Yngling class, Spanish team Mónica and Sandra Azón /Graciela Pisonero won the only race sailed today. Second position was for British sailors Sarah Ayton/Annie Luz/Lisa McDonald and third place was also for British sailors Dom Lindsey/Diana Shanks/Fleur Oswald.
In the Dragon class, with 41 boats entered, the winner has been Russian boat “My Best” with team Vadim Slatsenko/Andry Litsynskyy/Petr Zaharov. Second place was for Danish sailors Lars Hendriksen/ Peter Johansen/Martin Leifeldt, on board the “BB-King”, and Turkish boat “Alaturca” Arda Baykal/Kaya Dinar/Oguz Ayan were third.
The Laser class has sailed in 2 groups (Foxtrot area). Yellow group has been dominated from the beginning to the end by British sailor Paul Goodison, who has participated in many editions of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012. Second and third places have been for Spanish sailors Mariano Sarmiento and Javier Hernández. Mark Howard, another British sailor, has been the leader of the blue group, followed by Spanish sailor Julio Ruiz Gómez and Portuguese sailor Gustavo Lima.
The new Olympic discipline, the Laser Radial, has made a successful debut at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012. North American sailor Paige Railey has sailed a fantastic race and leads the overall results followed by British sailor Penny Mountford and German sailor Wiebke Schröeder, second and third respectively. If weather conditions are favourable, the competition will continue tomorrow at 11:00 hours.
Social events for tomorrow include a taste of Mallorcan products when sailors reurn ashore. The party will be held at the Sala Magna of the RCN Palma, with Martini and mojitos and the performance of a Cuban music band.
